Banks like RBC fund billions of dollars in fossil fuel expansion, violating Indigenous rights and destroying our liveable futures on a healthy planet. RBC’s policies are not sustainable, they are aimed at meeting the demands of oil and gas industry clients. Instead, RBC should set and meet high standards for emission reduction and set absolute targets for lowering overall emissions.

The largest financiers of climate disaster in the country have no place on our campus.

UOSU’s commitment to climate justice and decolonization, as outlined in our constitution and further elaborated upon in our positions, encourages us to support initiatives by students on campus that align with these values. In the past, UOSU has:

  • Signed Climate Justice Climatique UOttawa (CJCUO)’s petition calling on UOttawa to end its relationship with RBC.
  • Met with RBC Executives, John Stackhouse and Andrew Block, to present demands
  • Participated in tabling sessions and sit-ins outside the RBC on campus
  • Demanded that the University divest from fossil fuels and remove RBC from our campus
  • Addressed our concerns to Jacques Frémont at the uOttawa Central Administration Meetings
  • Transitioned our banking from Scotiabank, another fossil fuel investing big bank, to Desjardins, a credit union.
  • Met monthly with ChangeCourse and student unions from across the country, to discuss #RBCOffCampus Plans
