We have assembled here answers to the most frequently asked questions, as well as a helpful guide of how to apply to be a volunteer with the Centre.

Frequently asked questions
In terms of scheduling and commitment, it is very flexible as we ask that volunteers complete 3 hours of volunteering a week minimum (although many often complete much more). These hours can be completed at any time during the opening hours of the Centre and are tracked through the Community Engagement Navigator with the Michaëlle-Jean Centre for Global and Community Engagement. This means you can decide that you have a regular schedule or complete the hours freely when you can during the week; it is up to you!
Through this portal you will be able to indicate the hours that you worked as well as provide us with a short description of what you worked on – but this will also be covered in the Volunteer Training should you wish to continue pursuing volunteering with us.
The Womxn’s Resource Centre’s volunteering program is done through the Michaëlle-Jean Centre for Community and Global Engagement. This allows your volunteer hours to be “official” and recognised on your University records. We ask that volunteers commit three hours a week to volunteering, although these hours are very flexible and can be done at any time while the Centre is open. Volunteers are encouraged to talk with the coordinators to see what tasks need to be completed or to initiate new events or programs if they would like to lead them. The volunteering program is what you make of it and has no limits! Excited for you to join the team!
In terms of the work that volunteers do at the Centre, once again we are flexible and want you to do things you enjoy doing! The program is what you make of it and we are always open to hearing if you have new ideas for tasks/events/initiatives/campaigns/etc.
We have a “To do list” set up for volunteers that is quite extensive and presents a vast array of tasks you can choose from. To give you an idea, this list can include anything from helping to plan an online event (help with the planning of the event, the promotion material, contacting collaborators, hosting, etc.), help with some of our campaigns and initiatives (promotion, research, etc.; some of our campaigns and initiatives include Gender Neutral Washrooms, Period Poverty & Free Menstrual Products, Accessibility), or even help with the Centre’s social media presence (find cool things to post/share/promote; create infographics to share, etc.).
Additionally, we allow our volunteers to have the opportunity to create their own opportunities through personal projects (in the past we have had someone create a feminist playlist for the Centre and a presentation about how music can be empowering), the creation and leading of events they want to host (we’ve had volunteers lead kniting events), or even start their own campaigns and initiatives that the Centre supports them through (we have someone creating online sexual education opportunities).
Volunteering hours can be completed in person or virtually and are very flexible. This semester, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we ask that volunteers complete all their hours online and from home to ensure safety of all our staff and volunteers.
In short, the work that volunteers are asked to do is a very wide range of things that goes from helping the coordinators in event planning/campaign and initiative management and execution all the way to allowing you to create the experience you want at the Centre!

Volunteering Application Process
The volunteering program at the Women’s Resource Centre asks that volunteers complete the following steps before we can officially welcome you to the Centre as a volunteer. Please find the process below.
Firstly, you would need to complete the application form and apply for the position through the Michaëlle-Jean Centre for Community and Global Engagement‘s Community Engagement Navigator. There is no specific order that these two steps be completed, as long as they are completed before the volunteer training.
Volunteer Application Form : This form can be accessed through many ways; it is available on the Women’s Resource Centre page on the UOSU’s website, on our Linktree (linktr.ee/wrccrf), and you can also email a coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org) for a link to the form.
Community Engagement Navigator : Through the Applications tab on your uOzone account, you can find the Community Engagement Navigator. Here, you would go to the Placements drop-down tab and select either the CSL (for students doing a placement as a class requirement) or EV (for all other students) option. You then have the option to choose the session for which you want to apply to be a volunteer and can search for the position through the community partner name: UOSU_Women’s Resource Center. From here, you would select the position and apply for it by clicking select in the brown box on the left-hand side of the screen.
Once both these steps are completed, the coordinators will then send you a Doodle Poll link, which we ask you to complete, in order to organize the next Volunteer Training. When the next training session is organized, the coordinators will reach out to you to invite you to the session. At this short training, the coordinators will present the Centre and important elements (mandate, definitions, etc.), the general role and responsibilities of a volunteer, as well as give you a tour of the virtual and online portals volunteers will use throughout their hours.
